Backup rings are used together with O-rings at pressures above 1500 psi or where extrusion gaps are large, preventing extrusion and extending seal life.
A backup ring is not a seal on its own — it is the hard support that stops an O-ring being extruded into the clearance gap. Fitting one is the cheapest way to extend O-ring life at high pressure or where machining tolerances leave a large gap.

Key Features
- Temperature: −10 to 230 °C
- For pressures above 1500 psi / large extrusion gaps
- Materials: FFKM, FKM, AFLAS, PTFE, PEEK
Typical Applications
- Hydraulic cylinders and valves above 1500 psi
- Equipment with large extrusion clearances or worn hardware
- High-pressure wellhead and subsea connectors
- Pulsating-pressure service where an O-ring would nib at the gap
- Retrofit into existing grooves to upgrade a sealing system
