A layer of engineered fabric built into the diaphragm gives tremendous design flexibility: a very thin-walled rolling diaphragm can withstand high pressures while staying flexible and responsive to minor pressure variations. Nomex fabric is used for high-temperature duties.
Adding an engineered fabric layer turns a thin elastomer membrane into a pressure-containing element. A very thin wall can then carry high pressure while staying responsive to small pressure changes — which is exactly what a rolling diaphragm in a regulator has to do.
